Spring is here and that means spring cleaning. I love this time of year. I open up the windows, get the stale air out of the house, and clean up a season’s worth of grunge. Spring cleaning is great, but you have to be careful of chemicals and children or pets. That’s why I’ve put together my top 5 spring cleaning tips and tricks to get your home clean while staying safe and keeping the cost down.
Spring Cleaning Tips and Tricks – Simple, Safe, Effective, and Affordable
I love to get the house spic and span when spring rolls around, but I don’t love paying an arm and a leg for caustic chemical cleaners that can be dangerous to my family. Over the years, I’ve accumulate quite a few ways to keep the cleaning effective, safe, and affordable. Here are my top 5.
Lemon and Salt
Have you ever wondered why so many household cleaners always make sure to let you know that they have lemon in them? It’s because lemon is an excellent cleaning agent. People from office cleaning services use it too! Its acidity makes it great for breaking down grime, and they smell nice. Bonus! Lemon and salt on my list of spring cleaning tips and tricks because it’s a one-two punch. The lemon on its own is great for loosening grime and breaking up oil, but when you add salt to it, it becomes a super affordable scouring cleanser. For more delicate surfaces, use table salt, as it is less coarse. For something that needs a tougher approach like an older porcelain sink, use sea salt. Its larger size makes it a more coarse scouring agent. It’s exceptionally easy to do. Just cut a lemon in half and sprinkle a liberal amount of salt onto the surface you want to clean. Then, with the cut side down, start scrubbing away.
Vinegar is another super effective, all natural cleaner which is totally safe for humans and pets. I mean, we put it in our recipes. The great thing about vinegar is that it cleans well AND it’s an odor eliminator. You can use vinegar for everything from cleaning floors to pest control. The scent repels small wildlife, I spray it along the edges of my attic in the fall and winter to avoid needing costly raccoon removal services. One of the best uses for vinegar that I’ve found is soap scum and mold removal. All you need is a sponge and full strength vinegar. The vinegar breaks up the soap scum and the mold, and it eliminates that wet, mildewy, moldy smell that comes along with soap scum and mold.
According to companies like Geaux Maids baking soda makes top 5 spring cleaning tips and tricks list because it’s another affordable, safe, and effective cleaner. Its ability to whiten and eliminate odors is what makes baking soda really shine. For example, to brighten grout, simply make a paste of baking soda and water and scrub a dub dub. You’d be surprised at how well and how quickly it works. Is the drain in your kitchen or bathroom getting a little ripe? Pour some baking soda and vinegar down the drain. It will do the whole “volcano school project” thing, simultaneously eating away at the pipe crud and eliminating the odors. All you need to do is pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. Follow that with 1/2 cup baking soda, and then follow that with 1 cup of vinegar and 1 cup of very hot water. Let it sit for about 15 minutes and then flush with water. Instant pipe cleaning!
Easy Pest Prevention
This is another great tip from residential cleaners Brisbane North, because it’s not all about cleaning in the spring. Spring cleaning encompasses actual cleaning as well as prevention of things that could introduce dirt and dangers to your home. That’s why pest prevention has made my list of spring cleaning tips and tricks. This is also a great way to rope your husband into helping. To help prevent mice and bugs, plug any holes in the exterior of your home with exterior grade caulk. It comes in various colors, so you should be able to find one that looks good with your house. Also, make sure that the weather stripping on your garage door is fully intact. A garage door with damaged weather stripping is an open door to mice and other pests. You don’t really need those dusting sprays to get your home dust free. For one thing, they’re expensive. For another thing, every time you use them, you’re introducing chemical into your home’s air. Instead, use dryer sheets for dusting. The used ones work perfectly fine, so you won’t have to worry about your home becoming overly fragrant. The same properties that get rid of static clean in your dryer also work to trap dust. This is an affordable and safe option for dusting that I really love. Rather than just using my dryer sheets and tossing them, I can get even more use out of them!
