Heart Shaped Crayon Valentines

February 8, 2018 by This Mommy Saves Money 6 Comments

‘I am asked to repost this every year, so in case you missed it…

Ever since my little guy started going to pre-school, this has been a holiday tradition, for him and I. We do this for Valentine’s Day, St Patrick’s Day (we use various shades of green for this holiday), and Easter! This is a very easy, creative, and frugal art activity that anyone can do. You only need 4 things to make these. The entire project only cost $2 out of pocket!

1. Crayons (we use broken ones, who doesn’t have broken crayons in their house right?)

2. A knife

3. An oven, set for 240 degrees.

4. Candy Mold (for whatever holiday you want to make these for), commonly found at Target. They sell the 2 pks for $2 (for several holidays).

You simply place broken crayons inside each heart in the mold. I suggested the knife, in case some of your broken pieces are too big to fit.  Once your mold is full, pop it in the oven for 10-15 minutes at 240 degrees (oven times will vary).

Once your crayons are fully melted, pull the mold out of the oven, and let cool (we let ours cool a few hours, so they just pop out of the mold). For Valentine’s Day we stick a heart onto a  heart shaped construction paper with a crafter’s sticky dot, and he signs each one. They are always a big hit with his class!

We use various shades of green crayons and a shamrock mold for St Patrick’s Day. For Easter (yep you guessed it) an Easter Egg Mold and pastel color crayons.

Greenlight Debit Card – Great Way to Teach Kids Financial Responsibility

August 13, 2017 by This Mommy Saves Money Leave a Comment

If you are wanting to help your kid learn financial responsibility than the Greenlight debit card might be a great option! I have been using this with my son for four months, and let me tell you, it is AMAZING! Greenlight is a debit card for kids, that parents can manage from their phone! This is a great way to teach your child about finances and still have flexible parental control!

What is so neat with the Greenlight debit card, is that parents can pick the stores your child is allowed to spend money at! For example, you only want to allow them at first to buy something from the book store, you can set their account up, so they can only spend money using their card there! That is why they call this card the Greenlight, parents have to give the “green light to go”, for them to use the card! You can select stores in your area, for your child that are approved to spend money at, and they can only use the card at these stores. Any other stores will decline the card. As your child learns and grows, you can also allocate money to be used anywhere. My son recently took both his grandmothers out for ice cream, and used his “spend anywhere” money to do so!

How the Greenlight Card Works

You can put a set amount of money into each category on the card, that only the parent controls, and you can adjust this at any time! This is a great way for them to learn responsibility, and they will learn to pay attention to the balance on their card, so they know how much they can spend.

The parent and the kid both can download the app on their smartphones, so the kid and the parent both know the balance on the card. Only the parent can control the balance and where the child can spend the money though. I love this, because instead of giving my son a card, with no limits and no way to manage it, this allows me to slowly teach and allow him to learn about financial responsibility!

On your phone under the app settings, you can customize the notifications to fit your needs as well. If you want to know each time your child spends money, you can select that. I like that option so I can kind of stay on top of how much he is spending, and see how he is utilizing his money! What amazes me is that, while he is still at the register completing a transaction, my phone buzzes, telling me my child’s total spent and at what store he spent it at! When I see his balance is getting low, I have the choice to load more money or to wait. For our family, our child has to earn money (we don’t just give him money as this teaches nothing), he can do chores, get great grades on his report cards, and birthdays!

I love the idea of uploading my kid’s allowance to the card, and they can spend it but when it is gone, they have to wait for their next time they get allowance. This teaches them that they have to ration their money and to spend a little here and there so that they have money for awhile and don’t spend it all in one day!

Gives Kid A Little Financial Freedom and Allows Parents to Manage The Card

You can sign up to five kids per family, which is really nice for larger families. You can monitor it just the same, so it allows you to see where the money is being spent. There is a fee to use the card each month, $4.99 per family.

I truly think this is an awesome way to let your kid slowly dip their feet into spending money on their own! It gives the parents a little peace of mind to know exactly where and when they are spending money, and you can see how responsible your child is. If your kid spends their money in one day, they will quickly learn about “smart spending”. Start teaching your kids while they are young. Teach them strategies and let them know that you are there to help them learn how to be wise with their money and to gain financial independence.

Back to School: Organization Tips For Disorganized Kids!

Back to School: Organization Tips For Disorganized Kids

There are several ways for children to be successful in school, but it is not always easy. Many kids, and adults for that matter, lack the knowledge of how to use organization as a tool for success. Often times, it just takes a little organization to help kids. How do you know what type of organization strategy will work for your child? It might take some trial and error, but the following tips can ease the struggle.

10 Ways to Help Kids Get Organized for Back to School Success

Consistency is Key:

1. Schedules not only provide consistency, they provide security for kids. Create a schedule with your child for before school and after school activities. Visual Schedules work great for kids who are not yet readers or struggle with reading.
2. Routines are vital to organization. Again, the routines should be consistent. Every morning, after school, and bed time need to be the same every school day and night. Now, there are times where that isn’t always possible, but your child should know that at a specific time, they are doing a specific task.
3. Regular bedtimes are part of the routines you establish, but the time for bed needs to be carefully considered depending on your child’s age, activities, and personality. Some kids require more sleep than others, but regardless of how much sleep they get, their bodies actually need that time in order to grow physically and mentally. It also provides kids’ brains with clarity when they receive the rest they need.
4. Have a consistent time during the week when you do a backpack clean out and go through everything that’s inside. Put things in their designated spots and start with a fresh, clean backpack.
5. Get all materials that will need to go to school the next day ready before bedtime. Put everything in the backpack that must go and set it in a place where your child can pick it up and go.

Parental Guidance is a Must:

1. When helping a disorganized child get organized, it’s important to break tasks down into steps. Most of the time the disorganized child is overwhelmed and needs help looking at the larger task in smaller and more attainable steps.
2. Be sure to use specific language when breaking the task down. You will want to make sure your child completely understands what he or she needs to accomplish in each step.
3. Communicate often with the teacher to see how your child is progressing.
4. Be a role model. If you are going to expect a behavior from your child, you should model that behavior yourself so that your child understands how being organized can be a successful tool.
5. Get your child’s input. Find out what they think would help him get organized. Maybe he has an idea that you hadn’t thought of. Give it a try.

It’s not always easy to help a child learn to be organized. However, it can be done with help from you and the tips above. If something doesn’t work, it is ok, just readjust and try something else. The key is that it works for your child so that they can have success in school and for a lifetime.
