Teeming with good ol’ Southern charm, Savannah, Georgia is a friendly, welcoming, and neighborly town that is nationally recognized for its rich history, culture, and delicious food. If you are native to the state of Georgia, there is a myriad of family friendly activities and destinations that are perfect for planning the ultimate staycation. Even if you are not a Georgia resident, the following venues will help you to arrange an unforgettable vacation.

You can find Little Gracie at the Bonaventure Cemetery.  The story of Bonaventure Cemetery dates back to 1771! The Bonaventure Historical Society (BHS) offers free walking tours of Bonaventure Cemetery on the weekends featuring the second Sunday of each month. There is so much history in this cemetery.

The historic district in Savannah is rated one of the top attractions in this vibrant city. Original cobblestone streets, a plethora of shops and boutiques, trolley tours, and historic buildings are not only incredibly beautiful to see, but a perfect opportunity for educating your family about the development and historical past of this remarkable place. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes that will accommodate a significant amount of walking.

Just a short 20-minute drive outside of the city, Tybee Island offers great beaches, fantastic fishing, and a prominent Marine Science Center which is perfect for entertaining people of all ages. Plan to spend at least half a day here as you’ll want plenty of time to soak up the sun before exploring the various venues on this neat, little island.

Venture to River Street to take in the delightful street performers and observe the extravagant yachts as that can be incredibly steep and dangerous for high heeled shoes and unstable toddlers.

Take in a show or two at one of the many theatres and performing arts venues in and around the Savannah area. You never know who you might run into while walking in Savannah. Channing Tatum, Zac Efron, Robert DeNiro, and Ben Affleck are just a few of the stars who have been spotted in the city of Savannah lately!

Check out all that Mother Nature has to offer at the acclaimed Oatland Island Wildlife Center, and check out the exciting remnants at Old Fort Jackson, a restored 19th century fort that was established to protect this vital port city throughout many wars in the 1800’s. Have a flair for the Arts? Make sure to swing by the Telfair Museum, to see the Bird Girl statue, which was featured on the cover of the book Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. The Telfair Museum has monthly free family days, so check their website for dates. Here’s an idea: enjoy a few hours at the Telfair Museum and afterwards have a picnic in one of the beautiful squares downtown!

Finally, you can’t visit Savannah, Georgia without taking in some of the distinctive flavors of down home southern cooking at a few of this city’s most popular restaurants. Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House, Spanky’s, The Crab Shack and head to Leopold’s Ice Cream, for dessert. Leopold’s has been serving up delicious ice cream since 1919! These are all family friendly venues that feature extraordinary food.
