Why Small Businesses are Outraged at Facebook’s New Changes
That’s the first word that comes to mind when talking about Facebook’s new changes. If you don’t own a fan page, you may not quite understand what’s going on, but realize that this does affect you, too. When you see posts in your feed, they are from friends, families, and brands/blogs you like, right? Right. But now, you will be seeing things in your feed that are paid for, before you will be seeing things from brands you really like.
If I pay $30, my post will reach a higher percentage of my readers and fans. Sounds enticing, and maybe it would be if I were selling something, but I’m a blogger! I’m just blogging! I still want you all to see my posts, but how do I compete with the big dogs that can pay hundreds of dollars each week (or day!) to get their posts seen by you, while smaller companies don’t have these kind of resources and sometimes they need to get small business loans to be able to afford these expenses.
Many small businesses and bloggers are outraged at Facebook’s new changes, and I completely understand why. Last week, I did a little experiment. I paid $5 to Facebook to see if my post would reach as many people as they said it would. During the transaction, it said to allow three days for changes to be seen. So something that I post today might take up to three days before people actually see it. I don’t like that. What’s the point? If I post a deal today, it needs to be seen today, right?
Anyway, I put my $5 to work and waited, and watched. At the end of the day, a post that normally would have reached upwards of 10% of my viewers, had only reached 2%. Was Facebook holding back on this post, just to show me that I needed to pay more to be seen more? At the end of 3 days, my post was still not seen by as many people as it usually is.
I easily came to the conclusion that spending money to have my statuses seen would be silly. Facebook, I’m not paying you to access my readers! Facebook is a billion dollar corporation, so can someone please tell me why they need to make even more money?
